You Have Voice Mail! by Rabbi Y. Rubin

cellphone

It may seem blasphemous to 'impersonate' a Heavenly voice, but Jewish tradition teaches us that "the Torah addresses us in the language of man." Our technological age and the proliferation of   voice mail allow us to transmit Torah messages via this modern metaphor. Let us be careful in our relationships to press all the right buttons, let us try to stay connected, and above all, let us pray that our calls are answered and pleas heeded for a year of health and happiness, peace and prosperity.

Indeed, verbal or subliminal Divine messages are referred to in the Talmud: "Said Rabbi Joshua son of Levi: Each day a Heavenly voice issues forth from Mount Sinai, proclaiming: 'Woe to those who disgrace Torah... .and those who busy themselves in Torah are uplifted.'" (Avot 6:2)

You need not use a cell phone or subscribe to voice messaging service to avail yourself of this easy universal service.

Here is a voice mail addressed to you. Please listen carefully to the message, and respond.
