Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus never intended to become heroes. But in early 1939, as conditions were worsening for Jews living inside Nazi Germany, the Philadelphia couple embarked on a risky and improbable mission – an effort to rescue 50 Jewish children and bring them to safety in the United States. The couple faced imposing obstacles. The United States government, not to mention a vast majority of the American public, was largely indifferent to the plight of Jewish refugees seeking to escape from Adolf Hitler’s increasing persecution. America’s rigid immigration laws also made it nearly impossible to bring refugees – even children – into this country.
The Krauses, who were Jewish, also had to face the risks of traveling into Nazi Germany and dealing with the Gestapo and other Nazi officials in their effort to carry out their bold rescue plan. In the spring of 1939, Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus sailed for Europe and into the heart of darkness. 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus for the first time tells the incredible story of an American couple who, against all odds, brought the single largest group of children during the Holocaust out of Nazi Germany and into the United States. In doing so, they transformed themselves from an ordinary couple into extraordinary heroes.
Hi, my name is Esther and I'm excited,
I ‘m having a party and you’re invited.
It's nice to learn and to know,
Of our Matriarch Rebecca, long ago.
She Kindled Shabbat candles, we're told,
When she was only three years old!
Rebecca's candles made the world bright,
Soon I turn three, then I can light!
Mommy will help, to hold my hand steady,
Flame touches wick, then I'll be ready.
To cover my eyes, say the blessing, and see,
My new Shabbat candle, so special to me!
Please come celebrate my third birthday,
And hear the blessing I've learned to say!
We'll listen to Kiddush on fine kosher wine,
On delicious Shabbat foods we will dine.
Friday, October 11th is the date,
At 5:30pm, I just can't wait!
-Love Esther
Jewish life cycle tradition celebrates the spiritual and physical stages of growth. While informal education begins at birth, education takes on a more formal structure at age three when a child begins to truly learn & develop. As our Matriarch Rebecca, who lit Shabbat candles from the age of three, young girls are proud to join this tradition linking Jewish women through the generations, looking forward to the special moment she will share with her mother- a time of peace & personal connection to G‑d. Her face glows with joy & pleasure as she ushers in the Shabbat/Holidays with her very own candle, inviting peace into the home & infusing it with spiritual & physical light.

Little Leibel flourished in the Jewish paradise of Kovno, Lita, a benevolent community known for its loving-kindness. All changed when the Russians imposed Communist rule, and the Germans herded the Jews into a ghetto.
After seeing his father and little brother taken by the Nazis, 13 year old Leibel was shoved onto a cattle-train to Auschwitz, yet he clung to his roots and faith. The little sapling emerged from the ashes as a smoldering ember – scorched and darkened by unspeakable loss and pain, nearly dead, but very much alive, full of fire and passion, waiting for fresh air to fan the hidden sparks inside.
Hear the story of Leibel Zisman’s life, how he survived, and how, once liberated, he helped rebuild New York. A story of faith against the odds, of horrible suffering and indescribable joy, a story that will make you weep, laugh & rejoice with the gift of life.
May is Jewish American Heritage Month!
"America's shores have been a safe harbor for people seeking shelter, hope, and new lives free from persecution. The Jewish American story is an essential chapter of the American narrative. It is one of refuge from persecution; of commitment to service, faith, democracy, and peace; and of tireless work to achieve success. As leaders in every facet of American life, Jewish Americans shaped our Nation and helped steer the course of history. We are a stronger and more hopeful country because Jews from around the world have made America their home." - Presidential Proclamation

A
special screening of Whitwell Middle School’s Holocaust project featured in the documentary "PAPER CLIPS" will be shown Tuesday Dec 18, 2007 6:15 pm at Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library
PAPER CLIPS is the moving and inspiring documentary film that captures how these students responded to lessons about the Holocaust-with a promise to honor every lost soul by collecting one paper clip for each individual exterminated by the Nazis. Despite the fact that they had previously been unaware of and unfamiliar with the Holocaust, their dedication was absolute. Their plan was simplebut profound. The amazing result, a memorial railcar filled with 11 million paper clips (representing 6 million Jews and 5 million gypsies, homosexuals and other victims of the Holocaust) which stands permanently in their schoolyard, is an unforgettable lesson of how a committed group of children and educators can change the world one classroom at a time. Committed to collecting one paper clip in honor those who died in the Holocaust, these young people are awakened to the world around them, and to their own potential for understanding, empathy, and changing the world for the better.
